WhatsApp Status: everything you need to know

Do you want to temporarily share a photo or video with your contacts on WhatsApp? Then use WhatsApp Status. With a WhatsApp Status, your contacts can view your photo or video for 24 hours. You can make the photo or video more fun or add context with text. In this blog, we'll explain how to create, set up, and delete a WhatsApp Status.

How to create a WhatsApp Status

1. Open WhatsApp.
2. Tap on 'Updates'.
3. Tap on 'My status' to add a status update.
4. Create or select a photo or video that you want to share as your status.
5. Tap under the photo on 'Add a caption…' to add a caption to your photo.
6. You can also add text, stickers, or draw on your photo or video.
7. Do you want to make sure certain people or groups see your status? Use '@' to privately tag up to 5 people or entire groups in your status.
8. Use the send button to share your status.

Adjusting WhatsApp Status settings

By default, all your contacts can see your status updates. Through WhatsApp’s privacy settings, you can exclude contacts, hide your status, or only share it with certain people. You can follow the steps below to do this:

1. Open WhatsApp.
2. Go to 'Settings'.
3. Tap on 'Privacy'.
4. Tap on 'Status'.
5. Select one of the three options:
   • My contacts
   • My contacts, except…
   • Only share with…

Deleting your WhatsApp Status

Not happy with your WhatsApp status update? You can't edit an existing status, but you can delete it and post a new one. Here’s how to delete a WhatsApp Status update:

1. Go to 'Updates' and tap on 'My status'.
2. Open your status and tap on the three dots.
3. Select 'Delete' and confirm to remove the status.

How can I see who viewed my WhatsApp Status?

If you’ve posted a status, you can check who has viewed it through the following steps:

1. Tap 'Updates' at the bottom.
2. Tap your profile picture or 'My status'.
3. Tap on your status and then on the eye icon.

Now you’ll see a list of contacts who have viewed your status.

How can I view someone else’s WhatsApp Status?

1. In WhatsApp, tap 'Updates' at the bottom.
2. Tap on the profile of the contact whose status you want to view.

How can I view a WhatsApp Status update anonymously?

Do you want to check a WhatsApp Status without the other person knowing? You can view someone's status updates anonymously by disabling the read receipts. Keep in mind: when read receipts are off, you also won’t see blue check marks in your chats anymore.

To disable read receipts:

1. Open WhatsApp.
2. Go to 'Settings'.
3. Tap 'Privacy'.
4. Toggle off 'Read receipts'.

Turning off WhatsApp Status updates

You cannot completely turn off the Status feature. But if you don’t want to see updates from a certain contact, you can mute their updates. Here’s how:

1. Go to 'Updates'.
2. Open a recent status update from the contact you want to mute.
3. Tap and hold the status update.
4. Tap 'Mute' and confirm.
