Calling or texting Dutch numbers that are currently abroad is included in your Sim Only bundle . For example, calling a friend on holiday in Germany or Canada. Receiving calls within the EU is also free. So if you receive a call abroad within zone 1, you can just answer it, because it won't cost you anything!

Should roaming be turned on or off?

If you want to call, text, or use the internet abroad, make sure roaming and data roaming are turned on in your phone. See our Device Help for step-by-step instructions to do this.
In the Netherlands, roaming doesn’t need to be on. You're on Simyo’s home network via KPN.

What is the quality and speed of networks abroad?

When roaming in the EU, the quality of your connection will be as similar as possible to the quality on our network in the Netherlands. If that's not possible, we'll offer the highest possible quality on the network you are connected to.

The quality on a network abroad may differ from what you are used to in the Netherlands. This can be due to the network technology and generation, and the delay on the network where you are located. Internet speed may be lower and the delay higher if the network where you are located only has coverage with an older network generation, such as 2G or 3G. Internet speeds on newer network generations such as 4G or 5G should be higher. Are you experiencing connection problems at your location abroad? You could try to manually connect to another available network.
The internet speed determines how fast you can download and/or upload. It will also have an effect on the quality of the videos you stream, for example. Depending on your phone and the available network, you may have different call quality in certain locations. For example, the quality is better if you can make calls via 4G. You may sometimes notice a difference in network delay (latency) when playing online games.

Inspect the list with the quality per network within the EU .

I’m in an EU border area, at sea, or in a plane. How do I avoid high costs?

Are you in Cyprus or another border area with the EU and don't want to have extra costs? To be on the safe side, it's best to turn off your internet and pay close attention to the border messages. Before you make a call, check whether you have turned on your data or whether you are connected to a network that falls within Zone 1 (including the EU). Your latest border message should tell you which zone you are in.

Are you going to make calls, send text messages, and use the internet within the EU on an airplane? This is not covered by your subscription. Satellite rates will apply ( zone 4 ).

I can’t make calls abroad. How do I fix this?

See Phone connection abroad for the steps to fix this and make calls abroad again.
