Charging your phone with another phone: how do you do it?

Wireless charging your phone is already very convenient, but did you know that in some cases you can even charge your phone with another phone? This is also called reverse wireless charging. How it works and which phones support it, you'll read in this blog.

Charging your phone with another phone: how does it work?

To charge one phone with another phone, you will need two devices. Two things are important here:

  1. You need a phone that can charge another phone.
  2. The phone you want to charge must support wireless charging, this also called Qi charging.

While wireless charging is already a feature on many phones from different brands, a phone that can wirelessly charge other phones is still an exception.

Charging another phone with an iPhone

Unfortunately, it is not (yet) possible to charge another phone with an iPhone . It is possible with an Android phone that supports reverse wireless charging. Want to charge your phone with another phone? You can use a Samsung with Wireless PowerShare or any other Android phones that support wireless charging.

For iPhones it's possible to use your iPhone with the right USB cable to charge AirPods, an Apple Watch, or other small devices that support USB Power Delivery up to 4.5 watts. That is not wireless, but still useful.

Charging another phone with a Samsung

Samsung calls charging other smartphones and accessories wirelessly 'Wireless PowerShare'. Wireless PowerShare is also called reverse wireless charging. That is basically what it is: you use your smartphone’s battery to charge another device. Your phone becomes the wireless charger. This can come in handy if your phone still has plenty of battery, but your wireless earbuds don’t. But it can also be used to charge other phones.

How do you use Wireless PowerShare?

If your Samsung phone supports Wireless PowerShare, you can turn it on in the notifications panel or in your settings. Then you can:

  • Turn the phone over
  • Place the device or phone you want to charge wirelessly on the Samsung
  • If the two devices make contact, your phone will vibrate or you’ll hear a notification sound
  • Please note: not every phone case supports this, so you may need to remove your case

Which Samsung phones have Wireless PowerShare?

These Samsung phones, among others, support PowerShare:

  • Samsung Galaxy S-series: from S10 and newer
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 20
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 to 6
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 to 6

Charging another phone with a Google Pixel

Google Pixel phones can also charge other devices and accessories that are Qi certified. It works essentially the same way as Samsung’s PowerShare function: you place the phone or accessory on the Pixel and it will charge wirelessly. Google Pixel supports battery sharing from the Pixel 5 onwards, but there are exceptions. There are exceptions: the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8a, Pixel Fold, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold cannot do reverse wireless charging.
